ABSTRACT This paper investigates the dynamics of the SMART rotor, and presents a method to design a gain-scheduled controller to reduce the harmonic vibration throughout the flight envelope. The dynamics of the SMART rotor was examined at various flight conditions through nonlinear simulation. The simulation results showed that the dynamics is strongly dependent on the advance ratio, but only weakly dependent on the blade loading and the rotor shaft angle. To reduce the higher harmonic vibration throughout the flight envelope, a controller gain-scheduled on the advance ratio is presented. Output from linear time-invariant higher harmonic controllers designed for different flight conditions are blended to form the gain-scheduled controller. Closed-loop simulations of the helicopter rotor undergoing transitional flight with increasing advance ratio were conducted. The results from the closed-loop simulations show that the 5 per rev normal vibration was reduced by over 97% at the rotor hub.

Linear Parameter Varying Control for the X-53 Active Aeroelastic Wing

Fuel efficiency, endurance, and noise requirements are pushing modern aircraft to lighter, more flexible designs. This causes the structural modes to occur at lower frequencies increasing the coupling with the rigid body dynamics. The traditional approach to handle aeroservoelastic interaction is to design gain-scheduled flight control laws based on the rigid body dynamics and then use filters ...

Vibration Reduction and Performance Enhancement in Rotorcraft Using Active Flaps at High Advance Ratios

A computational study of helicopter vibration and rotor shaft power reduction is conducted using actively-controlled trailing-edge flaps (ACFs), implemented in both single and dual flap configurations. Simultaneous vibration reduction and performance enhancement is demonstrated under level flight condition at high advance ratios, where dynamic stall effects are significant. Power reduction is a...

Stability Proof of Gain-Scheduling Controller for Skid-to-Turn Missile Using Kharitonov Theorem

Gain scheduling is one of the most popular nonlinear control design approaches which has been widely and successfully applied in fields ranging from aerospace to process control. Despite the wide application of gain scheduling controllers, there is a notable lack of analysis on the stability of these controllers. The most common application of these kinds of controllers is in the field of fligh...

A Robust Gain-scheduling Example Using Linear Parameter- Varying Feedback

A gain-scheduling approach for uncertain Linear Parameter-Varying (LPV) systems with fixed linear fractional relationships on a parameter set is developed. The approach combines LPV theory based on Linear Matrix Inequalities (LMIs) and μ-synthesis to form a new robust approach for large envelope control design. The new approach is used to design an automatically gain-scheduled pitch-rate contro...
